Hummingbird.

Silence I just loved the silence. Everyone had left for prep and I was more than overjoyed as I sneaked back into the dormitory to hide from “the killer Bee” – the strict housemistress. I removed my clothes and changed into my morning coat. “I am gonna take a long shower and sleep until there is no tomorrow”. I said to myself. “It is Friday. Why did I have to show up to that stupid prep anyway? I thought Just then the dormitory door flew open and a figure made its way to my corner. Fear gripped my heart. “Omg, she has found me”. I couldn’t breathe. As the figure crept nearer my eyes began to scan my surroundings for a place to hide. I was too terrified to make any sudden moves so, I did what anybody would do. I closed my eyes, stood there, and hoped that the ground would just open up and swallow me. “Kukua is that you?” I heard someone say.    I knew that voice. It was just Vera. Sigh “You just gave me a heart attack,” I said amidst giggles. It was her alright.

“Go and buy foodstuff so that I can make something special for you”  Was what her mum said to her after she changed out of her work clothes into a towel, and sat in front of the television scrolling through the channels trying to find something to watch. She just stared at her for some time, organizing her thoughts and trying to find the right words to say to her. When nothing came out she nodded smiled at her mum and said to her. “Go take a shower, while I prepare something for you to eat, then go to your room and take a long rest. This is a normal day after all”. Christmas wasn’t about family.  She always saw that in the movies and on social media but her situation never allowed her to experience it. This time of the year always sucked because everything just finds a way to fall apart.  Her parents had broken up.  Her father moved on and neglected his duties.  Her mother became a workaholic.  Her kid brother is in a world of his own, losing a battle with pubert
